"Who Is Alive?" is the third episode in the second season of the Apple TV+ thriller series Severance. It was released on January 31, 2025.
Synopsis[]
Mark and Helly return to an old haunt. Irving and Dylan make separate discoveries. Outie Mark tries something new.
Plot[]
Cobel, who is sleeping in her car, wakes with a start when a semi drives past her. She clears the window with her mittens, starts the car, and starts driving.
Mark gets up and dresses. He drives to work and starts a stopwatch on his watch as he runs toward the door. Florence greets him at the desk and he grows impatient as she picks up the phone. A few seconds later, she nods him through. As the seconds tick, Mark runs down stairs. He pauses the timer as he takes off his watch and begins counting manually as he changes for work. He counts right up until he transitions to his innie self.
Mark prints Missing persons posters with a drawing of Gemma/Ms. Casey. He lays out the plan for himself and Helly to find the goat man and possible other goat people. Dylan will go to the new Break Room, which may be used by other departments. When Dylan says maybe later, Mark tells him it's important. Dylan says he's in a good groove, but promises he'll get to it. He tells Dylan to make sure he takes the sketch to show people. He gives a copy to Irving to take to O&D, reassuring Irving that he can do it. Helly asks if they really think Lumon will let them roam around and Mark reminds her that the video said they can go wherever they want. He tells them to be discreet because Lumon can't punish them if they don't know what they're doing. Helly confirms that Irving hasn't been to O&D since Burt left. She tells him they have his back, then leaves with Mark.
Helly asks what happens if they find Ms. Casey. He says they'll get her to the south stairwell and once they're outside, his outie will know what to do. He asks if she's sure she's okay helping him. She says she is.
Milchick finds a set of balloons in the hallway. He grabs them.
Irving tells Dylan he recreated the paintings his outie was working on. He thinks the hallway is down on the severed floor and that's what his dreams have been. They could go look for it together. Dylan says maybe or maybe Irving goes by himself for stealth purposes. They notice Miss Huang watching them. Irving walks past her, saying he has a hall pass. Once Irving is gone, Dylan asks her if everything is okay. She tells him to come with her.
Natalie greets Milchick when he enters his office. She has the board on for him. He thanks the board for his recent betterment. The board asks if he feels appreciated and he says he does. The board wants him to feel connected to Lumon's history, so they are giving him some re-canonicalized paintings to help him see himself in Kier. Milchick opens the box and finds the whole Kier cycle featuring a Black man. The board also wants him to know that Natalie received the same gift when she was put in her current position and found it moving. Milchick says he's grateful. It's meaningful to see himself reflected. Natalie tells him the board has concluded the call. She congratulates him and leaves.
Cobel pulls over near a sign saying Salt Neck is 238 miles away. She turns around and drives back the way she came from.
Mark and Helly find the goat room and knock on the door before entering. They find a tunnel and crawl through it. It leads them to a room filled with goats. Lorne appears at the top of the hill and asks if they're there to kill her. Mark says no and he and Helly introduce themselves and then ask what this place is. Lorne says it's Mammalians Nurturable. Mark says they just want to talk to her.
Irving walks toward Optics and Design. Felicia greets him, and he apologizes for just stopping by. She says it's good to see him and hugs him.
Mark shows Lorne the flyer and says she's Ms. Casey, their former Wellness Director. Lorne looks at it and says they don't abide such fripperies as Wellness. Helly says Ms. Casey has been retired but they believe she may still be on the floor. Lorne says they should leave. When they don't, she rings a bell and several more employees appear. She tells them they should have left.
Miss Huang leads Dylan through the halls. He asks what it's about, but she ignores him. Then he asks if she's being forced to be there and she ignores him. When she stops, he asks why they're going to the security room. She opens a door and allows him to enter. Inside, he sees pictures of his outie with his wife. A woman stands up behind and calls to him. Miss Huang says through good behavior and output, he's earned an 18-minute visit with his outie's wife, Gretchen G.. She starts his time and leaves. They sit down in chairs facing each other. She's shocked that he doesn't know her at all. Seth warned her it might be weird. Dylan asks who Seth is, but before Gretchen can reply, Miss Huang's voice warns them not to share anything that might be privileged or sensitive. Gretchen asks Dylan who the child is. Miss Huang says her own name. Dylan asks if he's in trouble. Gretchen says no. She tells him they have three kids. And Outie Dylan has had trouble keeping other jobs. Dylan asks if he's dumb or a dick. She says no. Nothing's wrong with him. He just never quite found his thing. When Dylan asks if he's a screwup, Gretchen doesn't answer. She offers to show him a picture of their kids. She pulls one out and tells him Jim is six and in first grade, Ruth is four, and Merrick just turned two. Dylan says they're awesome and Gretchen agrees. He asks if they live on a cattle ranch.
Felicia and Irving laugh over memories of Burt. Felicia worked with him for six years and only saw him scared of one thing. He spent two hours on his hair the first time he went to see Irving. Irving is happy to hear that. Irving shows Felicia a sketch he made of Burt which she says is lovely. She flips through the book as he says he drew one every day he couldn't see Burt. His numbers went down, but he didn't care. Then she gets to a hallway. He tells her it's nothing. She asks how he knows about the exports hall. They send a lot of shipments there. They used to go themselves, but now they send a guy. He asks if she remembers where it is.
The goat employees have surrounded Mark and Helly. Lorne whispers to one of them. Helly interrupts to show them the poster. Lorne tells her to stop, saying they are going to send a courier to tell Milchick what they're doing. Mark says they can't do that because Lumon might kill Ms. Casey if they found out. Mark says they used to be afraid of other departments, too. Lorne says she's not afraid, but Mark says they disappeared Ms. Casey. If they let it happen to her, who will step up when it happens to them. She asks if they would go looking for one of their goats if it went missing. Lorne looks at Wyatt and then says Ms. Casey used to come do her sessions in their husbandry tanks. She told one of the goat men his outie excels at star-gazing, which meant a great deal to him. Lorne says as far as they know, she was retired just like they say. If they suspect otherwise, they won't hinder their search. Wyatt clears his throat and Lorne says before they go, they want to see their bellies. Helly and Mark are confused, but lift their shirts. Lorne tells Wyatt they're pouchless, but Wyatt says that proves nothing. The workers disperse, allowing them to leave.
Miss Huang opens the door. Dylan gives the picture back to Gretchen and says he's glad they did this. He says he'll be good and make them all proud. She says she's always proud of him. They hug and she tells him she loves him. Then she apologizes, saying it's habit. It's awkward as they say goodbye. Miss Huang leads Gretchen out.
Gretchen tells outie Dylan to remember Merrick's ear thing. She asks if he did the cookies for Jim's class because it's their week. Dylan says he didn't and apologizes. She tells him it's a tube, so he just needs to slice them and put them in the oven. She kisses him goodbye and goes to leave, but he stops her and asks how the thing was, the visit with innie Dylan. She says it was good, but weird. She tells the kids she'll see them in the morning and leaves.
Natalie is reading from Ricken's book when Devon comes in. Ricken tells her that Natalie stopped by to discuss his book. Natalie is happy to meet Devon and says she must be proud. Ricken's work has found its way to their severed floor. Devon questions how that happened. Ricken says they moved beyond that and are now discussing the result. Ricken's words have had a profound effect on their workers and they think he's really tapped into something. Natalie wants to discussion a version of The You you Are specifically for innies. Devon says that's cool, but asks what's wrong with the current version. Natalie says there's a certain verbiage innies respond more favorably to. They just need to tweak it here and there. Devon says she has to go, but Eleanor needs a bottle in an hour. before she goes, Natalie says Mark is one of the sweetest members of their severed team. Devon says he's a good egg.
Devon tells Mark about Natalie's visit and Ricken's book. Mark is shocked. He asks if Devon has told Ricken what they're doing. She says no. Devon says he needs to see the afterimage for two minutes. He says for two minutes and eighteen seconds. That's how long it takes to get from the parking spot to the elevator, give or take. They've made a light with "Who is Alive?" printed on it, in the hopes of searing the afterimage on his cornea for long enough that innie Mark will see it. Devon thinks the Whole Mind Collective and Mark's kindergarten teacher would be proud of it. Devon leaves, telling Mark to be careful.
Milchick turns off his computer and gets up to leave. He sees the portraits and covers them back up, then puts the box on a high shelf.
Mark puts a blanket over his head and then flashes the light in his eyes. He founds how long he sees the afterimage. It's only twelve seconds, so he tries again.
Cobel meets with Helena and tells her if they want her back, they have to accommodate her needs. The first is MDR. Mark is close to completing Cold Harbor. She wants to finish the work she started, so Milchick must go. He's not up for the job. She has to be floor manager. Helena says she's showing an ego, which Kier teaches them doesn't serve them. Cobel says she earned everything she got, not because she was born into it like Helena. Helena thinks she's overestimated her contributions and underestimated her blessings. They didn't have to ask her back. Cobel says she didn't have a choice. Helena suggests that they reset. She calls Natalie and asks her to see if the board is available to speak to them. She tells Cobel they'll go speak to the board together. Cobel follows Helena over to a car, but then turns and leaves.
Mark counts the seconds and is startled when he sees Asal Reghabi. She asks him if he's trying to burn a message to his innie into his retinas because his computer told him it was a good idea. He says he is. She tells him it doesn't work. The switch briefly dilates the pupils, creating a clean slate. He could also blind himself. And his innie has no way to send a message back. Asal tells him to unlock the door because they need to talk. He lets her in the car and she says there's an easier way. He says it didn't seem easy for Petey. Asal heard about the Overtime Contingency. Mark tells her his sister talked to his innie who said a lot of things. Asal asks if he told her Mark's wife is alive at Lumon. He asks who told her that. She doesn't answer, so he asks if she's alive. Asal says she was the last time she saw her. Mark gets out of the car. He asks why she didn't tell him. She reminds him that they were interrupted. She wants to help him, but he has to trust her. There's only one way to get information in and out of Lumon and it's reintegration. She's better at it now and she can make it work with him. She can sew the two versions of him together. Mark tells her to do it. When she asks if he's sure, he says he wants to see his wife again.
Asal starts the reintegration process while Mark waits. She hooks Mark up to the machine and explains how it works. Ideally, it won't hurt. Mark's hand starts to shake as she works, so she stops for a moment. She asks him questions as she works, first about his outie's life and then about his work at Lumon. He starts to struggle to answer her questions as the two waves get closer. He remembers waking up at Lumon for the first time as his innie self.
