The team discovers troubling revelations.

Plot[]

Dylan activates the OTC, activating Irving, Helly, and Mark's innies.

Cobel asks Mark if he's all right. He says he is. She suggests that he talk to his sister because it's an important decision he's making. She asks if he's sure he's okay. He says he just got a bit woozy and excuses himself to the bathroom. When he goes the wrong way, Cobel directs him. He passes Patton on his way.

Irving is mid-stroke on a painting of a dark hallway. He looks around and sees several more paintings.

Natalie Kalen asks Helly how many drinks she's had. She says only the one she is currently drinking, which is good because she's on in twenty. Natalie tells her she was talking to the Board earlier and they're really grateful for this. They run into Gabby Arteta and Natalie introduces Gabby to Helena Eagan. Gabby is glad to meet her and Helly says she is as well as she realizes who she is.

Dylan holds both switches, stretching himself between them. He says it better be working.

Mark closes himself in the bathroom and wonders where he is. Devon checks on him. She tells him Rebeck smells weird and was making chewing noises while not actually chewing. Mark should be prepared because he might have to share a book with her because he forgot to bring his even though she reminded him. He looks down at Eleanor and asks how their baby is. Devon says she's good, but hungry. She tells hims she wants to have the talk about the life change but she needs to pump first.

Irving turns off the music and puts the paint down. He looks around and finds his dog, whose tag gives his name as Radar.

Mark comes across Patton and Danise, who tell him they were discussing for his sister to put off introducing Eleanor until after tonight's event. Danise says Mark doesn't have to weigh in on that. Mark realizes that Devon is his sister. He walks away and ponders what he's learned. Rebeck comes up to him and says she's been asked to share her book with him. She says she has to read pretty close, but he says that's fine and makes to get away from her. Mark goes to Devon, who says it's time for them to talk about the life change. He says this is going to sound weird, but he asks if they're close. He wants to talk to her privately. Ricken calls everyone to him for the reading to start, so Devon says they can talk at the first reflection break.

Irving finds several military medals in his place.

Helly and Gabby talk about her kids and she tells Helly she just had her third. She should have stopped at two. They run into Gabby's husband, Angelo, and Gabby introduces him to Helly. Natalie excuses herself to go backstage. Helly is in awe that Gabby and Angelo have three kids and Gabby says she couldn't have done it without a little help. She doesn't understand why people want to outlaw severance. Helly pretends she understands.

Irving looks through his closet and finds a chest.

Angelo tells Helly he already knew how he was voting, but thinks they can change some minds tonight with their photo display. Helly says she's certainly going to try. Angelo asks her to thank her father for him if she sees him.

Mark goes into the living room and sits with Rebeck. He's surprised when Rebeck hands him The You You Are. Ricken rings a bell using an app on his phone. He thanks everyone for coming and dedicates the reading to Eleanor. Mark realizes who Ricken is to him as Ricken begins reading. Cobel leans over Mark's shoulder and asks to share Rebeck's book.

Gabby and Angelo wish Helly luck. Helly looks up to see a large display of pictures of herself, purporting to tell a story of severance.

Dylan struggles to keep the switches on.

Irving finds a key in his pocket and opens the trunk. Inside is a naval uniform and a picture labelled, "Dad." Irving lifts the top of the trunk out.

Ricken continues his reading and finishes a chapter. He says they'll take a seven-minute reflection break before coming back. He calls for Balf to prepare the neti pot. Rebeck says that was transformative and she's going to have to change her name again. Cobel also lauds his work. Devon tells Mark to give her a few minutes and meet her in the baby's room. Mark goes to Ricken, who is critical of his reading and his voice shaking. Mark tells him it's going great and the book is brilliant. Ricken thinks he's lying, but he insists that he means it and Ricken's book opened up the world for him. It changed his whole life. Ricken is surprised he meant it. Mark asks if they're friends. Ricken knows he makes Mark feel "less than" for being severed and he regrets that. He knows Mark had to deal with Gemma's passing in his own way. He says he was scrolling through pictures and found one of the four of them on the crest hike. He asks if Mark remembers. Mark asks to see the picture. Before Ricken can show it, Balf tells him the neti pot is warm and Ricken excuses himself to flush his sinuses. Mark runs into Cobel and says he's going to check on his sister. Cobel asks him why he became tense while hugging her. He says he didn't know he did. She says he did and he's still tense. He says it's parties. She asks if he meant what he said about his plans. She wants to know more. Mark says he's on uncle duty, so he'll be right back. When she says okay, he thanks her, calling her Ms. Cobel.

Helly looks at the pictures of herself, laughing and smiling in MDR. She looks up at one picture that includes Mark.

Mark tells Devon he has to talk to her, but Eleanor is crying, so she tells him to meet her in the room. She promises she'll be back.

Devon goes to Cobel and asks her to take Eleanor while she talks to Mark. Cobel takes her and starts shushing her.

Devon goes back to Mark.

Helly watches a video of Helena talking about being an Eagan and how Lumon employees were her family. It confused her to hear that as a child, but as she grew up, she understood what it meant. She talks about her decision to get the procedure to take a severed job, which she said sounded awesome. She doesn't think severance divides them. She thinks it brings them together.

Cobel frantically drives. She calls Milchick, but gets his answering machine.

Irving finds several clippings of newspaper articles about severance. He also finds a list of severed employees with handwritten notes. He finds himself on the list and then flips through to find Burt. Also in the chest is a map of Kier. He finds Burt's house on it and then finds his own on a piece of mail and uses that to map out the route.

Helly goes to the bathroom. Her father, Jame Eagan, comes in after her. He tells her he looks nice and asks how she feels. He asks if she's still in pain and she says no. He cried when he learned that her innie tried to kill her. He thanks Helly for going through with it, telling her her grandfather would cherish her for it. One day, she'll sit with Jame at his revolving. He asks if she feels well and she says yes. The drink just hit her a little bit. He asks if she'll be okay for her speech and she says yes. He asks if she remembers him bringing home the first chip prototype to show her, with blue and green lights. She told him it was so pretty and everyone in the world should get one. They will because of her. They'll all be Kier's children. Natalie comes in and says it's time for Helly to get on stage. Helly whispers the compunction statement to herself.

Irving grabs his keys, coat, and the map and leaves. He starts his car and starts driving, figuring it out as he goes.

Devon asks Mark to promise he's not messing with her. He promises he isn't. They need to send people down there to inspect every inch of the severed floor. She tells him his outie has been trying to figure out what Lumon does, what his job is. Mark just wants to know why Mark put him in there. Devon says Mark lost his wife a little before starting at Lumon. Mark knows that she's Gemma. At first, he tried to keep teaching, but it was a disaster. So he thought a severed job would spare his innie from the pain. Mark says Gemma's a nice name and Devon tells him that they were all really close. Gemma was wonderful and made him wonderful.

Irving drives to Burt's place. Cobel drives past him in the opposite direction. She finally gets a hold of Milchick, who says they told him not to talk to her. She tells him the OTC has been triggered. Milchick tells her Helly is at the gala and she promises to fix it like she fixes everything while he goes to the security office to stop Dylan. Milchick runs to the office. He tries to open the door, but can't. He tells Dylan to open the door, but Dylan refuses and continues using the switches.

Devon says Ricken knows high-end journalists in New York. That might be better than the police because Lumon has their hands in so many pies. They have to be careful who they talk to. Mark doesn't know how much time he has. Devon realizes it'll be over once his bosses find out, which reminds him to ask why Cobel is there. His boss from Lumon is at the party. Mark describes her and Devon realizes it's the woman she knows as Mrs. Selvig. She runs to find her.

Natalie leads Helly to the stage.

Irving drives to Burt's house.

Milchick slowly cuts through Dylan's belt as he questions why Dylan is doing this. He was refiner of the quarter.

Devon interrupts Ricken's reading to ask if Mrs. Selvig is there, saying she has Eleanor. Ricken stops the reading and they begin looking for her. Devon goes outside and sees that her car is gone. She's worried she took Eleanor. They go back inside to look for her.

Irving reaches Burt's house.

Milchick says he can still get Dylan back into Kier's place for the show. He can get Dylan any perk he wants, even things he doesn't know about. He starts to list them, but Dylan wants to remember his kid being born. Milchick says he has two others and offers to tell Dylan about them if he opens the door.

Cobel drives to the gala. She leaves her car out front and goes inside.

The event coordinator tells Natalie they start in two minutes and wishes Helly luck. Natalie tells Helly she'll tee her up and she just has to stick to her talking points.

Irving watches Burt through the window. He then sees another man come into view.

Patton says Eleanor's not in the baby room. Mark continues checking rooms. He opens a door and finds Eleanor in there in her car seat, crying. Patton picks her up and tells Devon he has her, taking credit for finding her. In the room, Mark notices some photos on a table.

Milchick continues cutting and tries to talk to Dylan.

Natalie talks about severance. At the edge of the stage, Cobel grabs Helly. She knows she's Helly. Helly says she's going to kill the company. Cobel tells her that Helly's friends are going to suffer. She'll be long gone, but they'll keep the others alive, in pain. The event coordinator comes to get Helly and tells her she's on, pulling her away from Cobel.

Irving watches Burt and Cecil.

Mark pulls out a picture and sees that Gemma is Ms. Casey.

Helly steps out onto the stage.

Irving walks up to Burt's house.

Milchick continues cutting.

Mark runs into the living room calling for Devon.

Helly introduces herself as an innie and says everything they've said about severance is a lie.

Irving knocks on the door and calls for Burt.

Helly says the innies aren't happy. They're miserable. Lumon tortures them.

Milchick gets through the door and runs for Dylan.

Helly tells the crowd the innies are prisoners.

Mark tells Devon that she's alive.

Milchick tackles Dylan, ending the Overtime Contingency.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score).
  • The music over the final credits: Mose Alison - Your Mind Is On Vacation (and Your Mouth is Working Overtime)
  • The addresses on the envelope and the list of employees include a fictitious state code, PE, and ZIP codes in the 0745X range, which in reality are assigned to Bergen County, NJ. In one scene, the license plate of a car is clearly visible. The name of the state doesn't appear anywhere on the plate, but in the center of the plate is an image of Kier Eagan, and at the bottom is the Latin phrase "Remedium Hominibus": "A cure, for mankind." (Not "A cure for mankind" in the sense of mankind being a disease, which would be "Remedium Hominum.")
  • The map of the area they show is a map of Schenectady that has been changed. You can see neighborhoods such as Bellevue and Mount Pleasant.
  • During the book reading, Severance creator Dan Erickson makes a cameo appearance as one of the attendees. He is seen speaking to Devon and greets Mark as he passes by him.
