Kier Eagan is the founder of Lumon Industries and the ancestor of Helena Eagan.

History[]

Kier was born in 1841 to parents who had a "close biological relationship." Due to this, he was an ill child, and was afflicted with a condition that left him easily bruised. He also apparently suffered from tuberculosis as a child, later commemorated in the Kier Cycle painting "The Youthful Convalescence of Kier". According to the Fourth Appendix of the Compliance Handbook, Kier had a twin brother named Dieter, who accompanied him everywhere he went as a child.[1]

Kier exhibited a strong work ethic, and by 12 years old, Kier got his first job stuffing chairs for a furniture tycoon named Edgare Willit. Young Kier walked the seven miles to and from the job each day, and he characterized Willit as a sadistic employer who routinely beat the workers with the leg of a dresser.

As described in the Fourth Appendix, one day Dieter convinced Kier to go out into the wilderness with him, where they would live as "woodland paupers." One night while they were out in the woods, Kier overheard his brother masturbating. Later, Kier urged his brother to return with him to their father's ether mill, but Dieter wished to remain. According to the story, Dieter's body then suddenly began to decay and transform into sap, moss, and other woodland detritus. Kier walked away until he reached the waterfall Woe's Hollow, where the sound of the water drowned out the sounds of his brother's suffering. There he claims to have encountered the Temper known as Woe for the first time: a gaunt, stunted woman dressed in a bridal gown and veil.[1] Kier was later said by Seth Milchick to have entered Scissor Cave and tamed the Four Tempers. However, Kier himself stated that he tamed the Tempers within the "cave of [his] own mind."

He later met his wife, a swab-girl, while working as a stew-man in an ether factory, later depicted in the painting "The Courtship of Kier and Imogene". In his twenties, Kier spent some time serving as a military doctor. It was here he got the idea of creating and selling his own medical salves.

In 1865, Kier founded Lumon Industries and began his 74-year tenure as the company's CEO. Lumon flourished under Kier, evolving from a humble pharmaceutical company into an influential pioneer in the biotechnology industry. According to Seth Milchick, during his time as CEO of Lumon Kier often went undercover in order to hear his employee's grievances.[2]

Kier remained CEO of Lumon until his death in 1939. On his deathbed, he dictated the story of his brother Dieter's death, which would be recorded in the Fourth Appendix of the Compliance Handbook. He was succeeded as CEO by his son, Ambrose Eagan.

Legacy[]

In the modern day, Kier is a figure of near-religious (if not actually religious) reverence for both Lumon employees and people indirectly associated with Lumon. He is frequently referred to in the present tense as though he were still alive, in a similar fashion as Christians may refer to Jesus Christ. Harmony Cobel and Dr. Mauer both refer to their work as "serving Kier," and Jame Eagan has stated that his goal of distributing Severance chips to the global populace is to make everyone "children of Kier."

Harmony Cobel grew up revering Kier and keeps a shrine to him in her house in Baird's Creek, and her aunt Celestine continues to live her life in accordance with Kier's Nine Core Principles. The idea of the Four Tempers proposed by Kier continues to be taken seriously by members of the Eagan family and Lumon upper management. The Waffle Parties offered to exemplary Severed MDR workers involve an erotic experience provided by four individuals wearing masks modeled on the Four Tempers, with the recipient of the Waffle Party wearing a mask modeled on Kier himself.

His words are frequently quoted both by employees and on plaques throughout the Lumon Branch 501 building.

Quotes[]

  • “Let not weakness live in your veins, cherished workers, drown it inside you. Rise up from your deathbed and sally forth, more perfect for the struggle.”
  • “In my life, I have identified four components, which I call tempers, from which are derived every human soul. Woe. Frolic. Dread. Malice. Each man's character is defined by the precise ratio that resides in him. I walked into the cave of my own mind, and there I tamed them. Should you tame the tempers as I did mine, then the world shall become but your appendage. It is this great and consecrated power that I hope to pass on to all of you, my children.”
  • “The surest way to tame a prisoner is to let him believe he's free.”
  • “I knew you could do it, Helly R. Even in your darkest moments, I could see you arriving here. In refining your macrodata file, you have brought glory to this company and to me. Kier Eagan. I… I love you. But now I must away, for there are others who need me around the world. Goodbye, Helly.R, and thank you.”
