"Cold Harbor" is the tenth and final episode in the second season of the Apple TV+ thriller series Severance. It was released on March 21, 2025.
Synopsis[]
Mark forms a shaky alliance in an all-or-nothing play, while the team makes a dangerous last stand.
Plot[]
Devon asks if Mark remembers the last thing he said to her. He knows it was "She's alive." Cobel asks if he's finished Cold Harbor. Instead of answering, he asks where they are. Jen explains that it's a birthing cabin. Mark asks why he's there and why Cobel is there. Cobel asks him again about Cold Harbor. He tells her he hasn't finished it. Cobel says that means she's still alive and they can save her. He asks who she means and she tells him Ms. Casey while Devon says Gemma. She tells him about the Testing Floor. He recognizes her description as Irving's drawings. She's shocked that he knows where it is.
Jame stands in the doorway of MDR, saying Helly gave a funny speech at the gala. He was mad at her afterward. Helly says he's weird. He admits that he doesn't love his daughter. He used to see Kier in her, but he left as she grew up. He admits to fathering other children in secret, but Kier wasn't in them either. Until he saw Kier again. In Helly. Helly tells him that he and his family created hell and he's going to burn in it. Jame just comments on how much she's like Kier. Tomorrow is a special day. She asks why he came there and what he wants, but he leaves without answering.
Mark clarifies that once he finishes Cold Harbor, they're going to do a test and then kill Gemma. Cobel says once it's done, he'll need to get to the black hallway and go down to the testing floor. They won't let him leave MDR until the file is complete. Mark asks how he finds her once he gets down there. Devon says he doesn't have to. Cobel explains that his chip is programmed to his floor. Once he gets to the testing floor, he'll be his outie again. He'll find Gemma and bring her up to the severed floor, then innie Mark will guide her to the exit stairwell. Mark is incredulous. Devon knows it's a lot, but if they can prove Gemma's alive and they kidnapped her, it will end them. Mark asks what happens to the innies then. He realizes they'll cease to exist. He asks if they want him to give his life and the lives of everyone on the floor. Devon says it's not that simple. Cobel says it doesn't have to end his life. Devon says someone else wants to talk to him. She pulls out a camera and hands it to him. Cobel tells him to watch it, recording his response, then step outside. He plays a message from his outie. His outie apologizes for creating him. Lumon lied to him about what innies' lives were like. He wants to make it right and hopes innie Mark will give him that chance. He holds up the camera to record his answer.
Outie Mark wakes up and plays innie Mark's message. Innie Mark thanks him for his apology and says they find ways to make life work and feel whole. That's why he's scared of what Mark's asking him to do. The life they have is all they have and they don't want it to end. He asks if Outie Mark can understand that. Outie Mark replies, saying he started reintegration. Once his wife is free, he promises to finish the process. Their life belongs to both of them and he wants to share it. They share several more exchanges, working out what that'll look like. Innie Mark is concerned that the hybrid person will be more outie Mark than innie Mark. Outie Mark explains how Gemma's "death" affected him and innie Mark feels that outie Mark doesn't care about him. He's just using him. Because he'll lose Helly if he reintegrates because Helena never will. Innie Mark can't trust outie Mark.
Mark rants, saying innie Mark won't agree. Cobel asks to speak to him alone. Devon leaves. Once she's gone, Mark steps through the door, activating his innie. Cobel explains that the numbers are his wife. She helps him realize that the four buckets, the four feelings, are the four tempers. Every file he's completed has created a new consciousness for Gemma, a new innie. He says he's completed 24 files. She says Cold Harbor is the last. Tomorrow will be his last day at Lumon. He'll have served his purpose, as will have Gemma. He asks why Cobel is telling him that and what she's really doing there. Cobel says he and Helly won't have a happy ending. She's an Eagan and he means nothing to them. Mark doesn't believe her and runs away. Mark asks Devon if she loves her brother, the next thing he sees better be the severed floor or he'll never see his wife again. He steps outside.
Innie Mark wakes up at Lumon. He sees a picture of himself surrounded by other Lumon employees as well as his family. As he steps out, Helly hugs him and the look at the painting together. They both have things they need to tell each other.
Helly and Mark make their way through a hallway to MDR. They come to a wax statue of Kier Eagan, holding a note with Mark's name on it. The note celebrates him completing his 25th file. It's signed Mr. Milchick and has a pop-up waffle on the inside. Mark goes to his work station and sits down to get started. Helly tells him what Jame said about seeing Kier in her and it being a special day. Mark says he knows why it's special.
Milchick walks through the hallway and turns on all the lights. He meets Dylan at the elevator. Dylan is shocked that his outie rejected his request to resign. Milchick asks Dylan to follow him.
Gemma looks at her outfit, the one she wore the night of the accident.
Helly asks what happens when they remove the chip. Mark doesn't answer. Helly doesn't think they can trust Cobel. Mark says she seemed different. He works on his file. He says he could not finish the file and not get her out. Helly says if Cobel is telling the truth, they're screwed either way.
Gemma asks Cecily what's happening. Cecily tells her to get dressed, that everything will be fine. Gemma takes the outfit down.
Helly says maybe if he gets Gemma out, it'll take down Lumon like Devon said. And then he can do reintegration. Mark says his outie could also be a liar. Helly asks what if he isn't. He'll have a chance at living. Mark wants to live with Helly. Helly reminds him that she's Helena. He continues his work and gets to 98%.
Milchick says his outie responded to his resignation request. As he might have an embarrassing emotional response, Milchick will allow him to read it privately. Milchick puts it down and runs out of the room. Dylan reads his outie's response, which has three points. The first is fuck you for what he did with Gretchen. The second is that he understands because Gretchen is perfect. He admits to being jealous of innie Dylan for his confidence. Point three is that he hopes Gretchen someday sees in his outie what he sees in his innie. He likes knowing that innie Dylan is there. If he wants to leave, he can, but he thinks innie Dylan should stay.
Milchick removes his tie as he runs down the hallway.
Mark is at 99%. Helly says she's been trying to think of place names aside from Delaware. She doesn't have many and she doesn't know what they are. Helly wishes they had more time. Helly pulls the note with directions to the Testing Floor hallway out and moves to Mark's desk as he finishes the file. She slips him the note and he sorts the final number, a happy one.
Mr. Drummond tells Dr. Mauer to call Jame and leaves. Dr. Mauer picks up the phone.
The lights around Mark go out and his station turns off. Then music starts playing. A spotlight appears on Kier and his animatronic celebrates Mark's achievement. He introduces Mark's floor manager and Milchick comes in. The animatronic razzes Milchick, who razzes back. Then Milchick introduces Choreography and Merriment. He pulls the animatronic out of the room as a marching band comes down the hallway.
Once Gemma is dressed, Cecily tells her it's time to go.
The marching band enters the room and plays the Kier chant for Mark.
Jame goes to a console.
Gemma walks down the hallway to a console, which says an efficacy test will begin shortly.
The performance ends and Seth says they'll keep it going with a Ballad of Ambrose and Gunnel. As he says his, Mark tells Helly he needs to leave. They start playing and Milchick dances. Helly asks Mark if he's ready. When he says he is, she runs toward Milchick and steals his radio off his belt. With Milchick distracted chasing her, Mark slips out and pulls out the directions. He makes his way to the Testing Floor hallway.
Milchick finds his radio in a toilet. As he goes to leave, he finds he's locked in the room. Helly is holding the door on the other side.
Dylan walks through a hallway.
Mr. Drummond walks into a hallway and opens a door.
Mark runs toward the Testing Floor.
Cecily leads Gemma to the Cold Harbor room.
Lorne pushes a goat in a cart.
Helly continues holding the door. Milchick is finally able to open it. He asks her where Mark is. Dylan appears and moves a vending machine to block Milchick's way.
Cecily opens the door to Cold Harbor and Gemma steps in, becoming a new version of herself. Dr. Mauer gives her directions over a speaker, telling her to enter the room. In the room is an empty crib.
Jame watches a feed of Gemma on his console.
Gemma approaches the crib. Dr. Mauer asks who she is. She says she doesn't know.
Lorne brings the goat to the same hidden room where Drummond is. Drummond opens the door and she says Mammalians Nurturable brings an offering. He verifies that it has verve and wiles. She brings the goat into the room. Drummond prepares a captive bolt pistol and says for Lorne to give him the goat's life.
Gemma gines a screwdriver in the crib and Dr. Mauer tells her to take it apart.
Milchick tries to fight his way out of the bathroom.
Mark is still running toward the Testing Floor.
Drummond says they give the animal to Kier. He hands the gun to Lorne.
Mark tries to open a door, but can't.
Lorne holds the gun to the goat's head. She asks Drummond how many more goats she must give. Drummond says as many as the Founder calls. As she moves the gun, they hear banging.
Mark is outside the door, kicking it, looking for a way in. Drummond steps out and finds Mark. There's a struggle and Drummond pins Mark to the floor, choking him. Drummond freezes when Lorne cocks the gun by his head. She says there's to be no more killing. Drummond knocks her back and they fight. She gets him to the floor and hits him several times, then puts the gun to his head. Mark yells for her to wait and she stops.
Jame watches Gemma take apart the crib. Dr. Mauer is also watching and tells Jame the barrier is holding and Gemma feels nothing. He finds it beautiful.
Mark holds the gun to Drummond and leads him down the hallway, leaving Lorne and the goat behind. He thanks her and she says Emile thanks him. Emile is the goat.
Mark gets Drummond into the elevator and says he's about to change into his outie and then Drummond will take his outie to ... before he can finish, his outie activates. As he does, Mark fires the gun into Drummond's neck, causing him to bleed profusely. When the doors open, Drummond falls out onto the floor. His legs block the door from closing. Mark, now covered in blood, looks around and then slowly walks down a hallway.
Milchick tries to climb over the vending machine to escape, but Helly pushes him back with a trombone. Then she shoves other instruments into the gap over the objections of Bukayo, who tells her they're the property of Choreography and Merriment.
Mark looks at the rooms as he walks by.
Gemma continues her work as Dr. Mauer watches.
Milchick orders Choreography and Merriment to return to their department. Bukayo blows a whistle and says their performance has been compromised, so they need to return to C&M. Helly appeals to them, explaining that their friend Irving is gone and they want the whole department gone. If Milchick gets out, they'll turn them all off like machines. She knows they've lost friends, too. And they could be next.
Mark finds Cold Harbor.
Helly says Lumon gives them half a life and hopes they won't fight for it. She begs them to help.
As Mark goes for the room, Cecily asks how he got in there. He tells her to open the door and holds the gun to her. She refuses and walks down the hallway. Mark sees a hand print pad. He puts his hand there and it pricks him, which gives him an idea. He puts his blood-soaked tie next to the needle and, when it detects Drummond's blood, it opens. He finds Gemma, who is startled by him. She doesn't recognize him.
Dr. Mauer sees Mark step into the room.
Mark explains that he's Gemma's husband. He tells her her name and their story. Dr. Mauer comes on the speaker, telling her not to speak to Mark, that he's there to hurt her. Mark says if Gemma comes with him, they can get their life back. Dr. Mauer orders her not to let Mark touch her, but she takes Mark's hand.
Dr. Mauer tries to call Drummond, but doesn't get an answer.
Mark leads Gemma out of the room as Jame curses.
Dr. Mauer runs to Cecily, who tells him it's Gemma's husband. He tells her to call Drummond.
Mark leads Gemma to the hallway and tells her she can come out, that it's okay. When she steps out, she becomes her outie and she and Mark smile when they see each other. They hug and kiss. And alarm starts blaring.
In MDR, Milchick, Dylan, and Helly also see the alarm. Helly smiles, realizing what it means.
Mark and Gemma run down the hallway.
Milchick looks at himself in the mirror.
Dr. Mauer calls for Gemma as he chases her and Mark through the halls.
Mark and Gemma reach the elevator and get on, pushing Drummond out of the way. Once the doors close, Mark asks Gemma if she's okay. He kisses her, but then his innie and her Ms. Casey innie activate. They look at each other awkwardly and she asks him what's happening. When the doors open, Mark leads her out.
Milchick charges the vending machine, knocking Dylan down.
Mark and Gemma run through the halls.
The vending machine falls, freeing Milchick from the bathroom. Milchick jumps on top of it.
Mark takes Gemma to the door and tells her she needs to go right away.
Milchick looks down to see Dylan flanked by all of Choreography and Merriment.
Once Gemma steps through the door, her outie activates. She looks back and sees Mark. She begs him come through the door, saying they have to go. He puts his hands on the bar, but then takes them off. As she continues begging, Helly appears at the other end of the hallway. Mark turns and goes to her over Gemma's objections. Mark takes Helly's hand and they run through the hallways together.
