Asal Reghabi is a former surgical worker from Lumon Industries who performed the severance procedure, but is now opposed to and on the run from the company.

History[]

Employment at Lumon[]

Roughly two years prior to Mark's reintegration, Reghabi was employed by Lumon Industries as a surgeon in the medical team that handled Severance procedures. According to her account, she was the one who implanted Mark Scout's Severance microchip during his surgery.[1] She was also aware that Mark's deceased wife Gemma was in fact alive and being held at Lumon, but she did not know why, only that Gemma was "essential."[2]

Disillusionment and Rebellion[]

At some point, Reghabi became disillusioned with Lumon due to their unethical treatment of the Innies on the severed floor, causing her to quit and go into hiding at Ganz College, establishing a makeshift surgery in an old lab building.[3] Using her prior experience with the severance technology, Reghabi was able to single-handedly create a reversal process called Reintegration, which recombined the two separated halves of a Severed person's brain back into one person, breaking the rumor that severance was irreversible.[4] Through unknown means, she came into contact with severed worker Petey Kilmer and performed the first successful reintegration procedure on him, fully recoupling all of his memories, and allowing him to infiltrate the severed floor for a time. Though she gave him specific post-op instructions to ensure his recovery, Petey panicked at the first signs of illness and fled,[1] slowly suffering a hallucinatory breakdown of his own mind known as reintegration sickness, which eventually killed him.[4]

Reghabi called Petey's phone incessantly until Mark finally picked up one night, saying he was a friend of Petey, though she quickly figured out it was him. She requested he meet her at Ganz College that night, which he reluctantly did so. When he arrived, she had him follow her.[3]

Reghabi led Mark to her surgery center and explained that she was the one that implanted his chip, and was the only one who could deactivate it, as she had done with Petey. Mark expressed skepticism at deactivating his chip, but Reghabi reminded him of his Innie and what he would say to that. Dismissing his Innie as content with his own life, Reghabi fired back and told him he would never know if his Innie craved freedom from Lumon, and that he only came into existence due to Mark's desire for an emotional escape. Mark told her he wasn't a bad person, but she instead believed that both versions of him wanted to do what's right.

Doug Graner unexpectedly interrupted them and began questioning Mark, attempting to trick him by saying they were friends on the severed floor. Sneaking away, Reghabi suddenly ran from behind and smashed a metal baseball bat into Graner's skull, knocking him down before finishing him off with two more whacks. She then ordered Mark to help her move his corpse, explaining that he was the severed floor's Head of Security and demanding Mark not throw up from the stress, as he would contaminate the scene with his DNA. She took Graner's all-access security keycard and gave it to Mark, assuring him that his Innie would know what to do with it at work tomorrow. She also had Mark give her Petey's phone, then told him to go home and get rid of his clothes. When he hesitated to run, she said she'd be in touch and swore they would finish what Petey started, then screamed at him to escape.[1]

Reintegrating Mark Scout[]

Reghabi later resurfaced and found Mark in his car trying to burn an afterimage onto his retinas, as a way to pass a message to his Innie, which she told him wouldn't work due to the chip's activation briefly dilating the pupils. She says that she heard about the Overtime Contingency incident and asked if his Innie revealed Gemma was alive and well at Lumon, which he questioned her about. She relented and confirmed that Gemma was alive the last time she saw her, causing Mark to break down crying. Reghabi told him that there was only one way to get messages into Lumon: reintegration, which she had managed to improve at and could make work for him. Mark instantly agreed, wanting to see his wife. In Mark's basement, Reghabi set up her surgical equipment into a makeshift operating room, and explained to Mark that they had to recombine the two divergent brain waves for Innie and Outie respectively. Once they began, Reghabi began asking him a series of questions both personal and taken directly from the Lumon oriental training manual, probing which set of severed memories was dominant. When Mark began to struggle with remembering anything, the waves finally combined, and he was sent back to his first day on the severed floor.[5]

With the first phase of reintegration complete, Reghabi told Mark they would take the rest of the process slowly, in order to be safe. She moved into Mark's basement and provided him with daily medication and specialized medicine to prevent reintegration sickness. When Mark came home at the end of the day, he found Reghabi searching through old memorabilia and Gemma's handcrafts, which would act as triggers to rattle his memory. When Mark asked who was in the cremated remains box he thought held Gemma's ashes, she said Lumon had someone at the morgue on their payroll like half the town. When Mark asked if they were hurting Gemma, Reghabi admitted she didn't know. As he made to leave the basement, Mark heard a whisper and questioned Reghabi, but she denied saying anything. Mark then experienced a powerful hallucination of the severed floor and finally saw Gemma alive, though in her Innie form, listing facts about his Outie.[6]

Mark later told Reghabi about the experience, which pleased her as it proved they were making progress, though he admitted it was like a nightmare. She told him it was a good thing because he was having flashes of more recent memories from his Innie. He asked what Lumon was doing to Gemma and Reghabi admitted the only thing she knew was that Gemma was essential to them, but once he achieved full reintegration, it would be him and Gemma on the outside together again.[2]

While conducting another session, Mark suddenly flashed forward in time from the severed floor to his basement, but was unable to remember anything at Reghabi's prompt. Realizing they needed to move faster, she told him that they could speed the process up by surgically "flooding" his chip through the pre-existing hole in his head. Fed up, Mark aggressively pulled away and demanded she stop, leaving to cure his reintegration-induced hunger to her dismay. However, after a tense encounter with Helena Eagan, Mark returned and apologized to her, requesting they do the surgery that night. After using a scalpel to cut through to the hole in his skull, Reghabi injected an unknown fluid and flooded the brain area around the chip. Mark instantly felt the effects, flashing between his Innie memories and his own, then abruptly sitting upright in confusion. She warned him not to move his head fast, but a knock suddenly sounded at the door. She told him to ignore it, but Mark recognized it is his sister Devon and was forced to greet her against Reghabi's instructions. Mark soon suffered a seizure from his erratic head movements, causing Reghabi to burst into the room and tend to him as he convulsed and began to foam at the mouth.[2]

Reghabi and Devon watched over Mark as he remained unconscious, hooking him up to an IV. When Devon pressed her for answers, Reghabi told her that Mark had chosen to reintegrate, though Devon refused to believe it and threatened her if she touched him again. Shutting her down, Reghabi revealed to her that Gemma was alive, convincing Devon to let her continue her work. Later, Devon told Reghabi about the Damona Birthing Retreat and proposed using its severed cabins to talk to Mark's innie, but she already knew about it and dismissed it as being helpful in saving Gemma. Devon then suggested calling the recently-ostracized Harmony Cobel, as she might be willing to help them now that Lumon had cast her out. Reghabi instantly shut the idea down, as Cobel was raised by Lumon and would turn both of them in in a heartbeat. When Devon insisted on calling her however, Reghabi made the difficult choice to leave, as her fight against Lumon would be finished in an instant. Devon attempted to convince her to stay, but Reghabi told her it wasn't her own choice, it was Devon's, then departed to avoid capture.[7]
